Carrying out WORK IN CONFINED SPACE

Accidents related to work in confined spaces can have serious consequences.

Working in such spaces involves risks such as suffocation due to lack of oxygen, exposure to hazardous gases, fires, and explosions.

Definition:

"A space designed with limited openings for entry and exit, having unfavorable natural ventilation, which may contain or produce hazardous air contaminants, and is not intended for continuous occupancy by personnel."

Employers should ensure inspections and necessary measurements to confirm that the working environment is safe.

Inspections must be carried out by a competent person who has received special training for the task.

The inspector must:

  • Conduct inspections and necessary measurements.
  • Issue work certificates to workers when the atmosphere is confirmed to be safe.

Safety Measures:

  • Risk assessment (SJA)
  • Ventilation is almost always necessary.
  • Personal gas detectors for everyone inside the tank.
  • Entry watch.
  • Communication between those working inside the tank and the entry watch.
  • Control of ignition sources.
  • Personal protective equipment.
  • Adequate lighting.
